This is to announce that EduART will not be holding its biennial competition for Cameroon Literature in English in 2013 as previewed.  We are in the process of revamping the organization and admitting new partners in our ranks which entails revising our mission statement and activities. While we have made efforts in encouraging budding and established Anglophone Cameroon writers with our awards, we now believe even more than before, that finding ways to get this literature into the hands of readers in Cameroon and beyond has become extremely urgent.

Ekosso, Barfee Win EduArt Awards 2011

Rosemary Ekosso and Wirnzerem Barfee, Cameroonian fiction and poetry writers, respectively, distinguished themselves at the second edition of EduART Awards, which took place at the Eta Palace Hotel, Buea, recently. Ekosso, international translator and interpreter was shortlisted for the EduART Jane & Rufus Blanshard Award for fiction for her debut novel, The House of Falling Women.

EduArt Awards 2010: Deadline Extended to August 30th, 2010.

In order to make the award more representative, the deadline for EduArt Awards for Cameroon Literature in English has been extended to August 30^th   2010. We are calling on all eligible writers and publishing houses (Buma Kor  publishers, Miraclaire, Designer House, Patron Publishers, Langaa etc etc)  to take advantage of this extended deadline.  You can find the application guidelines on this site or at  www.eduartawards.org. To those of you who have applied already, you will be receiving a confirmation call, email or letter soon, if you have not already recievd one.

ELIGIBILITY RULES

There is no restriction on setting, theme or mode.  EduArt  accepts any fictional work which falls in any of the categories below:

1. Fiction (Novel or collection of short stories) (see explanation below)**
2. drama
3. collection of poetry

Non-fiction books are not eligible for these Awards

To be eligible for the 2010 award, the work must meet the following criteria:

1. The work must have been written by a citizen of Cameroon
2. The work must have been published in Cameroon or any other African Country.
3. It must be of a reasonable length
4. The work must have been first published between 1^st January 2008 and 31 December 2009.
5.  The author must be alive on the closing date for entries.
6. The entry must be originally written in English. (We regret that works translated from other languages are not eligible.)
7. The book (s) should have been published with an adult readership in mind.

For a collection of short stories or plays to be eligible, at least half of the short stories or plays in the collection must have been published after 1 January 2002. **

SUMMIT Magazine Hits The Stands With Feminine Focus

The fourth edition of SUMMIT Magazine hit the stands over the weekend with an even improved quality and shift of gender focus. The glossy silhouette magazine that won the award of the best magazine in Cameroon recently, broke away from focus on men to "A Woman on the Go", Dr. Joyce Ashuntantang.

It explores the world of a woman who has taken Anglophone Literature to University classrooms in the United States; who is an actress, screenwriter, journalist, movie maker and university professor.

Besides Dr Ashuntantang, the magazine took interest in the lives of young celebrities, balancing the gender between CRTV's "Charge d'Etudes Assistant" for Special Coverage at the National Assembly, Esther Kima, and Yaounde I University's Theatre Arts Lion King, Donatus Fai Tangem.

It also intruded into the worlds of Alain Blaise Batongue, Publisher of the Cameroon French Daily tabloid, Mutations, and Jean Paul Yana, Commercial Specialist at the US Embassy in Yaounde.

50 Years After "Things Fall Apart": A Chat with Chinua Achebe

“Okonkwo was well known through out the nine villages and even beyond. His fame rested on solid personal achievements. As a young man of eighteen he had brought honor to his clan by throwing Amalinze the cat”.

With these words Achebe began Things Fall Apart and introduced the world to modern African literature. For some of us these words have become sacred and the author, Chinua Achebe, a demigod.

I have enjoyed teaching Things Fall Apart every year since I became a professor of African Literature in the US. The work lends itself to multiple layers of interpretation which are revealed with every new reading. The novel has sold over eight million copies in the United States alone. It has been translated into 50 known languages.

EduArt Awards for Literature- Results

The 2007 EduArt Awards for Cameroonian Literature written in English have been released. The Bate Besong award for poetry published in 2006 was highly contested and the winner is John Ngong Kum for his poetry collection Walls of Agony. The chief judge, renowned poet and Distinguished Professor, Tanure Ojaide of the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, holds that:

Ngong’s Walls of Agony is superior in its use of English and poetic language. It has consistency of imagery in the symbolic “wall” that permeates the poet’s vision of life, society, and politics as he explores personal and public concerns. ..Ngong also has a strong sense of form, which shows on the pages of his book. Most of the poems are in regular stanza and that gives the impression of organization and good craftsmanship. There is a sense of evenness in his work. As they stand, Ngong’s Walls of Agony is the best in language, unified vision, and form. He deserves the poetry prize.” Prof. Ojaide also commended the runners up, Mathew Takwi for his collection On their Knees and Kamara Kimvala’s (A. F. Ndangam) Tears of Rage and described both volumes as exuberant.

Manyu Women's Art & Folklore poetry

African women's art is usually neglected especially because it functions principally in the domestic sphere, but we are beginning to claim our own. In the following poems, Dr. Joyce Ashuntantang celebrates Manyu women art and folklore. Manyu Division is found in the Southwest Province of Cameroon.

EduART AWARDS FOR LITERATURE

EduART Inc has launched three annual awards for literature written in English by Cameroonians and published in Cameroon or any African country. These awards are:

Victor E. Musinga Award for Drama
Jane and Rufus Blanshard Award for fiction and
Bate Besong Award for Poetry

There are at present no annual awards for literature in Anglophone Cameroon. EduArt hopes that these awards will encourage not only the production of more creative writing but equally boost publishing in Cameroon.  These are people's choice awards which means the winning entries will be selected by a cross section of the reading public and not only by literary experts.

Who Are We?

EduART is a US based tax-exempt corporation operating under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Service. EduART, Inc. seeks to use both creative and performing arts to educate, enrich and entertain both Africans on the continent and African immigrants in the U.S.A on varied social and economic developmental issues in order to increase a productive lifestyle. EduArt will also use these artistic media to educate non-Africans on African values, cultural heritage and social lifestyle to facilitate tolerance in the community.

Dr. Joyce Ashuntantang is presently an Assistant Professor of English/African Literature at the University of Connecticut at Storrs, and an Associate to the UNESCO Chair and Institute for comparative Human Rights at the University of Connecticut.

Joyce has been active in using various artistic media as educational tools for twenty years and counting. She is an actress par excellance; a founding member of the Cameroon Flame Players, and a memorable member of the Yaounde University Theater. Her acting career received a boost in 1987 when she attended an international workshop on theater in Detroit, Michigan where she received training from movie/theater icons including Ossie Davies. While Joyce still enjoys acting every now and then, she has transferred some of that passion into writing scripts and shooting videos and films promoting human rights. After co- founding Akobat Global Media in Cameroon in 2001, she has now founded EduART INC, a US registered non profit organization.



Appearances and Activities

• Co-coordinator Human Rights Convocation organized by the University of Connecticut regional campuses and the Community colleges, to be held  on April 20th 2007 at Manchester Community College, CT.


• Dr. Ashuntantang gave a talk titled "The Art of the African Woman: Enduring performances: Empowering Traditions"  at the African-American Museum in Philaldelphia on March 31st 2007


• EduArt together with the Goodwin Elementary school, Storrs - Mansfield, PTO organized an afterschool diversity mixer for kids in K- 4th grade in January 2007


• Dr. Joyce Ashuntantang hosted Miss Africa USA beauty Pageant in Atlanta Georgia, October 2006


• Dr. Joyce Ashuntantang moderated the MAWA (Minesota African Women Association) Conference, June  2006

"Resolved!" - A Movie

-EduART Inc. is presently working on the production of a feature film tentatively titled “Resolved!” which combats the stigma and discrimination that plagues patients with a HIV/AIDS. The film highlights the resources available to HIV/AIDS patients in the USA while breaking some of the African cultural assumptions about the disease, which inhibit African HIV/AIDS patients from seeking help.
